Recent research shows that people with a good social network live longer. And obviously, being surrounded by good friends and family contributes to one's happiness. But reports of loneliness and feelings of isolation are on the increase. It's not that we need a lot of friends, just a few good ones. Someone you can have fun with, talk to, and definitely someone to visit you in the hospital! If you're feeling lonely or suspect that you may be spending too much time alone, here are some things you could try:

- Volunteer -- just google "volunteer near me" to find opportunities that interest you, such as cleaning up local parks or working with animals.
- Spend less time online with your FaceBook friends. Invite one of them out for coffee.
- Organize a small potluck dinner with friends -- a very easy way to start entertaining.
